An exhibition at Megalo gallery showcasing the work of artists in residence during 2015.
The suite of prints I made during the residency were watercolour monotypes. The drawings are based on the navigation maps made by Marshall Islanders. These stick charts or rebbelib are made of bamboo sticks and cowrie shells, with the shells denoting the locations of islands in the chain. The important information contained in the map isn't the location of the islands. The bamboo sticks that make up the frame also represent ocean currents and wind patterns, used by Marshallese sailors as navigation guides.
The idea of navigating days that were difficult using a guide made for the vastness of the Pacific Ocean seemed apt.
