I first visited the insect market in Shanghai in 2007. The idea of keeping insects as pets fascinated me and I returned to the market each time I visited the city. There are stalls that display the crickets in plain box containers but mostly they are displayed in ornate cylindrical containers. The paraphenalia associated with cleaning, feeding and persuading the crickets to sing was also for sale. This series of screnprints enlarges the crickets in their ornate containers to a scale where they seem like strange monsters.
