In this screenprint series I have used a diagram of the tile classification plan for an auditorium in Torrevieja. The diagram details the tiles required to create a curved surface encompassing curved space. Through overprinting and the brief insertion of a stencilled shape there is a destabilization of our reading of the diagram, the surface of the page and the nature of the form suspended in the “fabric” of interwoven lines. The stencilled forms are mandala shapes: symbolic diagrams used as an instrument of meditation representing the universe, and a collection point of universal forces. (1) Each layer of ink can be interpreted as a moment in time and the finished print has captured a series of moments on one surface, suspending time’s flow.
The process I have used not only suspends time but dematerializes the mandala shape, creating a sense of the form dissolving or hovering like a ghost within the spatial zone of the layered ink. The rational world of the engineering diagram is interrupted by the symbolic mandala shapes to create a space for considering different understandings of time and embodiment.
