I made three tapestries for a group exhibition "Take Time".
I have been using tapestry weaving to create a series with the overarching title “Comparative Anatomy”. The heart is a clock, the metabolic rates and size of diverse species result in their hearts beating one billion times in a lifetime. The tapestries are based on zoological textbook illustrations, in particular - dissections of the hearts of marine and reptile species. The beat of the heart pumping blood around the body finds an analog in tapestry through the rhythm of weaving and beating down the weft with the bobbin. The careful building of the forms from scratch is also a parallel to the processes of anatomical investigation that are the foundation for my practice.
